Jinghong is the capital of Xishuangbanna prefecture in southern Yunnan. Bordering both Laos and Myanmar (Burma), this region often feels like it has more in common with Southeast Asia than it does with China. In some regions you would be better off speaking Thai than standard Chinese. The city itself is a laid-back relief from other areas of China. You can use it as a launching pad to explore the surrounding regions, or you can just get caught up in the easy-going vibe of Jinghong itself. Share some betel nut with the friendly Burmese jade merchants or head off to the numerous parks to make friends with the locals. With such an appealing climate, it would be easy to stay here much longer than you had expected.
