The city of Kota Kinabalu is the capital and the gateway for Sabah State on Malaysian Borneo. The city is named after nearby Mount Kinabalu, the largest mountain on Borneo and one of the most important biological sites in the world. Mt. Kinabalu National Park is a UNESCO protected area. Kota Kinabalu is a waterfront city with a lively boardwalk, fish markets, jetties and nearby islands that offer excellent snorkelling opportunities. Beyond the city, Sabah State offers some of the best diving and animal safaris in the world.
